Character
Character Name: Gilbert Nightray
Fandom: (include link) Pandora Hearts
Timeline: Post realization Chapter 65
Crimes: Murder, Aggravated Assault, Accessory to disorderly conduct, Spying, Conspiracy to commit spying against House, impersonation of a minor, breaking and entering, and stealing.
Personality: Bullied. Passive. A follower. These would describe Gilbert fairly well, both in his youth, and within the current timeline. Gilbert, for all of his strength, all of his ability and intelligence, needs someone to follow, to stand by and protect. In this case, it was Oz. Standing by his side, he is stronger, less likely to fear, be more determined. Without Oz, he is adrift; Gilbert does not know what to do, or what to stand without him. In a way, for all that they are close friends, Oz is an ideal. Better worded, Oz is his god. He has often said things such as: 'I will do anything for my master'. Oz is his world. He replaced the need to discover who he was before, and why no one searched for him when he reappeared out of the abyss, injured onto dying and alone.
Needless to say, Gilbert has a few abandonment issues. His parents gave him up; his first master was lost; his second master was taken from him. Though he seems fine in being alone, it's a lie. He can't stand it, more so then the regular person. Then again...Gilbert often does not have the choice in the company he keeps.
For example, there is a certain, if somewhat amusing problem that relates to a phobia. A very strong, and disabling fear of cats. If he sees one, he freezes up; he's not much use for anything until the creature goes away-or is, at least, far away from him. Even people and creatures that only look a bit similar to a cat scare him. He's had this phobia since he was a child-and it's suspected that it started with a certain girl and her pet cat over a hundred years ago. A girl known as Alice.
There are those that annoy him, and there are those that give him the chills. In this regard, he is not very skilled in hiding his annoyance, and for the most part, he doesn't try. He is not above calling someone names, or even getting into a small tussle or two. He'll leap into a fight without a quam at the time, for all of his regrets later on. All it takes is just pushing Gilbert's buttons in the right way. And that's all he'll need to leap in. He's even been known to be distracted from certain goals by being provoked or letting petty jealousy get in the way.In the case of Alice, letting arguments and jealousy get in the way a lot. They nearly were injured at one point, as they were distracted by their bickering. Gilbert will even flail about and sputter in a panic. He can be blunt as anything, and with it, make cold blooded choices. He will not torture, but he will not hesitate to kill if he has to.
But by no means does this mean that he has no regrets-or that he is a bully. It has been seen in panels that he has had regrets on killing for the sake at getting the chance to master the Raven, to protect Oz and others unable to defend themselves.
Gilbert, in fact, as a quiet personality, and does not not often speak unless provoked by the people and events around him. It could be said that he has a fear for social situations: what is taken as snobbery is truly shyness, and discomfort in being around others. After all, who knows what they might say or do? They might have him speak. They might reveal him as inferior, a nobody, unworthy. In short, this is yet another anxiety that he has held within him. If he can stay away from being a noble, he'd be happy. It'd be easier for him if he could be in the background, or by his master's side. There are no ones exceptions pressed upon him but those of his master.
Still, he is kind enough to care for the welfare of others. For all that there are those that would attempt to use their chains in order to create chaos, he would plead for there not to be fighting where others could be hurt. Though he is often bullied by Break, he also saved him when it looked as if he was going to die, both from the strain of his chain, and from fighting the Baskervilles. The ceaseless bickering that was between him and Alice was now changed by events, turning into a kind of respect. Thus, he displays not only the ability to change his opinions, but the ability to adapt and change.
There are some things that do not change though, for all of his growth: that of finding his self, his sense of being, by serving another. It has been something not only drilled into him as a child, but a sense of belonging that he clings to. To serve Oz gives him a measure of peace. He can be obsessive in sharing his time, or his affection, as we've seen in the case with Alice-he was openly jealous and angry at her presence. There are two obvious reason for this: Alice takes not only Oz attention and affection, but she could very well be killing him slowly. That is what a fate illegal contractor like Oz in most situations-or they die. Thankfully, once he realize his place is not challenged by Oz's side, he settles, and does not like the anger take over. He will serve Oz, and that's all he needs, no need to be shaken. Not about the relationship between the two of them.
However, even with everything that has occurred, now that his memories are starting to come to the surface, and he is realizing the truth about himself, his true first master, and the blindfold that has so skillfully been covering the eyes of the cast (but for perhaps Vincent, the Baskervilles, and Duke Barma), Gilbert is shaken. His world is starting to crumble, in the face of the truth-that he failed to protect the one he served first in his heart. And perhaps, with allowing the lie to continue, to not let himself see the truth, he is now harming his second master. To hurt the one you love the most, even by accidental omission, is truly the greatest pain that Gilbert could suffer. The question is now, after all the times that he has been allowed himself to be used for the gain of others...would he allow such a thing? Would he be a lesser man and deny what memories he has? Or will he stand on his own two feet, and protect Oz-not only from those on the outside, but the monster within? One would hope that he would take the last path-but denying what he is, who he is, and the actions that he has done up to now can be in fact as natural as breathing for him. Perhaps, in this journey of discovery, Gilbert will keep the same conviction that allowed him to become the Raven's keeper, and do what's right-even if by saving Oz, he would have to kill him.
Abilities: This can be divided into two categories: What he can do personally, and that of the Chain he has. So, that's how we'll do it.
He happens to be a great cook. No, really. He could be working in a four star restaurant, he's so good at it. However, unless it is for his master, he hates admitting to such. It just serves as a another way to get bullied around (which doesn't stop Break or the cast from verbally pushing him to cook though). He was trained in the art of service however, in both Glen's household, and Oz's, so he's pretty dang good at being a manservant. He's just not allowed to slip into that role very often.
He's a crack shot. He trained for years in order to gain the skill he currently has, and still continues to do so. His standard weapon is a revolver, which is standard for his world and time.
Also, while Gilbert is so clumsy that he tends to trip over himself, get him into a fight, and his reflexes and agility are above par. I would compare him to a cat even (for all that he would hate it). Nonetheless, he's not the kind of shooter who would stand around and let himself be filled up with lead.
It has been alluded to that Gilbert underwent another kind of training after he was accepted into the Nightray household: the art of assasination. It has not been seen in canon however, so I won't touch on it so much. I assume, however, it would be more or less having to do with picking locks, sneaking around, and perhaps poisoning a target.
Gilbert also has some unintended blessings, being a Baskerville. Mostly, it's just extremely difficult to kill him. No, really. He's been poisoned, slashed, shot various times throughout the manga, from when he was little more then a tyke, to his current age. He has very little scarring to show for it-just a slash on his front and back, from very deep sword slashes. There has yet to be any problem with scar tissue, for all that it is across some vital organs, proving all the more his limited invulnerability.
The Raven
This is his chain, which, for the purposes of making things less confusing, is akin to a summon. Gilbert made a contract with it, and now carries around a gold pendent that has been soaked in Raven's blood. With this, Gilbert is able to summon his chain. It is perhaps one of the most powerful within the Pandora Hearts World, and was one of Glen Baskerville's personal chains. The others are assigned to other Houses-the Barma House having the Dodo, for example. But, let's not get into the it's over nine thousand bit, and go with what we know.
Pandora Hearts has been rather vague in all the abilities that the Raven has. We do know its general appearance at least: a giant, terrifying crow with a skull for a head, always bound by a multitude of chains and surrounded by, probably, hellfire itself. Some of the Raven's abilities are revealed as the situations calls for it: for example, it is able to spit out what appears to be blue flames in combat. We also know that when its powers have been actively used, there has been a multitude of feathers that float to ground in its wake. It can transport its user and those they select over long distances (though this strains Gil so much that he collapses soon afterward). The Raven is known most infamously however for sealing the power of other chains-Alice, aka the Bea Rabbit. However, while the Raven is sealing a chain, the Raven cannot use any of its other abilities.
Multifandom Test: Okay, so we have the multifandom testing, to see if I know how to interact with those not my canon? No problem. Let's say for arguments sake that he met with Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed game series. Now, they have many things that are similar; they come from disgraced houses, and have little family left-and both of which was betrayal from a source they trusted. Both kill for the name of doing is necessary-one for his master's well being, the other first for revenge, then for the greater good.
In this, they may be able to get along fairly well, or at least be able to have an empathy for each other. An understanding of what it is like to kill, and to have that cold calculation that others may be squeamish to. They've both known loss, big and small.
However, it would depend on the first encounter. They could either be very good friends with an understanding of each other or...Ezio could very well be disgusted with Gilbert. It depends on how he presents himself-and if there is a cat around. No lie. Gilbert has, as stated in the personality section, has a bad phobia about cats. So this could lead to Ezio underestimating him, wondering why he's so scared of a little kitten, or wondering why he is such a wuss. He may scoff at the fact that he lets himself get bullied around, and how timid Gilbert is by nature. However, in a situation where Gilbert may display how ruthless he can be, despite it all...Ezio might see him as someone to form an alliance with, or to keep an eye on for in the future-and eliminate him if need be.
So with Gilbert and Ezio, it could be a relationship based on understanding what needs to be done, a rivalry, or a clear underestimation which leads to a classic case of trolling.
Action post sample:
Screaming. The last thing that he remembered was screaming so loud, his throat hurt. Was it Vincent's touch that made him fall asleep? One touch over a period of time, he had said. That was the chain's power. But that was no longer Vincent's only chain.
Was he headless now too? Was the reason he was sinking in these thoughts was due to being dead? No. That could not, would not be possible. Not by Vincent, and not by the illegal chain Deimos. Not after realizing the reality of who and what he truly was.
He was something the world despised. By the shattering crystal material, and the silent rolling head, he knew that all he supposed true were lies. He had failed his previous master. The breaking of his heart made him dive into the darkness still further.
But then...he realized something. He wanted to wake up. No matter what was true and what was false, if he was just a human or a Baskerville, he needed to know the truth. Gilbert needed to know if Oz was still alive. And he needed to know why Jack had lied to him. He was too honest when he confessed he was not a hero.
It felt like sloppily slipping through mud, struggling to awake. Not just mud he decided; it was a landslide, slimy, frictionless, clinging. A few times he came close to wakefulness. And That mudslide of oblivsion would pull him down again. Frustrated, Gilbert wondered if it was drugs or his current state making it so hard to wake up. With an inner growl, he struggled again, reaching up for what he thought was a globe of light-
And he saw what could only be a lightbulb.
He did not get up right away; everything was hurting. His eyes were watering at the bright light; his temples ached. His back was one giant cramp-from healing itself, or from the feeling of being on cold tiles, he wasn't sure. Gilbert closed his eyes, wincing as he brought himself up to a sitting position, using his hat to cover his face for a few moments. It was right there. Good. At least he had one thing going for him; his hat still with that faint, pleasant smell of having it washed. (He had to wash it: the thought of having it tainted with other scalps after losing it for that day was just a nightmare). After a few moments though, he lowered his hat, and looked around, unsure of himself. Had he been dragged into the Abyss, or a related dimension? He had no idea. But he didn't like it.
He liked it even less when he realized he was without his gun. He had to feel for the golden chain clasped to his throat-and was relieved to have the coldness against his fingers. But there was something wrong with it. It did not have that same aura, the assurance that he could tame the B Rabbits power under his hand. And then he saw the greeting. Gilbert realized what it meant-and hissed through his teeth, fingers grasping around his hat and squishing the fabric all out of shape.
Damn them.
He hissed again, and just about tossed the communicator when he realized what this meant. No way out, and it felt as if the Raven was so near-and yet so far. Why hadn't the Acumen taken him after he had known the truth...?
Fear struck him then, feeling too close, causing his body to bow, curl over himself, for his breath to choke and his in his throat. If he wasn't there, Oz was alone. Oh true, he had the power of his chain-but Oz shouldn't use it. Shouldn't. It was dangerous, dangerous as Leo striking him down. And he would be alone always with Jack-
He shut himself off from that thought, and forced himself to stand, panting, wild and restrained all at once. He was there, and Oz was not, and there would be people-he had to kill for master-
He screamed then, unsure if it was himself or anything else that was causing the noise that was coming from his throat. It sounded so desperate keening and scared. It sounded angry. It sounded like a battle cry.
"Take me back! I need to go back!" His gloved hands slammed against the wall. Fear kept him away from the door. "Let me back! Acumen! ACUMEN!"
This went on for a few minutes, until his back cramped, and he slid, shaking onto the floor, his palms sore and pressed against the wall. He wasn't sure if he was truly crying, or if all of the wetness sliding down his face was a reaction to the pain racking his body.
"Oz..." He allowed himself the pitiful cry, covering his eyes with his hand. "Don't forgive me. Don't forgive me. I'll just fail you again. I'm sorry. I'm sorry...."
Network post sample:
How is this supposed to work...ah. There's the little light; it seems to be on.
[The light goes on, and the video comes on, displaying a young man in his twenties, with black hair flopping in his golden eyes. As if aware of his disheveled state of his person-not only with the rumbled, bloodstained shirt, which still looks wet from a wound-he adjusts his hat, revealing dirty gloves on his hands.]
All right. My name is Gilbert Nightray, and I seem to be held prisoner by the...will here, also known as the warden. Apparently, it monitors crimes from other worlds.
...I can't deny it. I likely deserve to be here. For many reasons. But, if you are aware of the name Baskerville, or Pandora, I would like to speak to you.
I'd like to know if this Warden is of any way related to the Will of the Abyss. It acts like it's not but....
[He let's his words trail off, and he sighs.]
Thank you.
[He fumbles, but he is able to turn off his device in order to curl up in a corner and wait.]
